Dundee Laboratory Refurbishment
The Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service required to alter the main SNBTS laboratory at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee. In addition there was a temporary lab to be set-up in advance of the main works, and there were significant technical challenges such as severing and re-joining the main oxygen intake pipework for Ninewells Hospital, installing negative pressure airlock doors and replacement external windows. It was critical to SNBTS that careful consideration was given to the programme especially the short time scale and the fact that the building was fully occupied during the works and SNBTS works 24/7. Deliveries, programme of works and methods were crucial to the project success.
The conversion of existing lab space into a new bespoke and high spec lab involved demolition of existing partitions and doorsets and all associated services whilst maintaining power supply and other services to the remainder of the building. The new build works included ceilings, partitions, doorsets, electrical, plumbing, floorcoverings, decoration, lab benches, air handling and pipework, and replacement external windows. As principal contractor, Transform supervised and managed the project with our in-house project management team, and utilised the vast majority of our in-house trades to complete the works. The project was completed with no technical issues, and within the client’s tight programme constraints and the result is a new high quality lab facility. The final account was agreed within the client’s original contract value, and our change control system successfully captured architectural variations to produce a clear and satisfactory financial outcome for SNBTS.
